Milam & Greene Desert Marigold

Milam & Greene is best known for blending whiskeys distilled in both Texas and Kentucky, but its newest bottle skips Kentucky entirely. Wildlife Desert Marigold is a straight bourbon distilled and aged at the brand's own distillery in Blanco, Texas, and just three barrels yielded only 288 bottles. It is the final release in the 2026 Wildlife Collection, and at $149.99 it is a showcase for what the distillery's own pot-distilled bourbon can do after more than seven years in the Texas heat. The company announced it on October 28, 2026.

Did You Know?

  • Just three barrels produced the whole run, which works out to 288 bottles.

  • The barrels aged on the south side of Rickhouse No. 1, and were filled in December 2018 and January 2019.

  • The name comes from a golden wildflower native to western Texas that grows in rocky soil, extreme heat and drought, and feeds pollinators.

The Release

Most Milam & Greene bottles are blends of whiskeys from more than one state. Desert Marigold is different. It is an entirely Texas-born bourbon, distilled, aged and bottled in Blanco, and it puts the brand's own Texas pot-distilled whiskey front and center. A pot still is a batch-style still, as opposed to a continuous column still, and it is often chosen for fuller, more characterful spirit.

The mash bill is 70% corn, 22% malted rye and 8% malted barley. That is a lot of rye for a bourbon, and malted rye in particular tends to add spice and depth. Each of the three barrels is an Independent Stave barrel with a medium toast and a No. 3 char, which refers to how deeply the inside of the barrel is burned. The whiskey is seven years and eight months old, and it is bottled at 124.2 proof (62.1% ABV).

According to the brand, the bourbon is mahogany in color. The nose offers cinnamon rolls, butterscotch, maple syrup and spiced apple cider. The palate brings caramel, crème brûlée, almond and cocoa, and the finish is a lingering maple sweetness with cooling mint.

The whiskey was harvested on October 5, 2026 and bottled the next day. Milam & Greene frames the release as a pure expression of what it calls "Texification," its term for the way Texas heat and big swings in temperature and humidity transform whiskey as it matures.

The Story of Milam & Greene

Milam & Greene is built around two names. Founder Marsha Milam launched the brand alongside whiskey expert and author Heather Greene. Today the whiskey is shaped by Master Distiller Marlene Holmes, who the brand says is the 99th inductee into the Whisky Hall of Fame. The distillery sits in Blanco, in the Texas Hill Country, and everything the brand does is tied to the idea of Texification.

The company defines that word as transformation through place, in the barrel and in the soul. In practice, it means a hot, swinging climate that pushes whiskey to mature differently than it would in cooler regions. Milam & Greene says it hand-selects barrels, ages its spirits under Texas skies and blends with precision.

Marsha Milam has described whiskey as defiant, because it cannot be rushed. Her line is that whiskey is "a rebel in the way we live today."

The lineup covers a lot of ground. Provisions Bourbon sits at $35.99, Very Small Batch Straight Bourbon Whiskey is $69.99, and the Blender's Reserve Collection includes Unabridged Volume 5, a blend of straight bourbon whiskeys, at $94.99. The brand also lists a run of 2026 honors, including the Texas Whiskey Festival People's Choice Award, a Double Platinum at the Ascot Awards and a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Why It Stands Out

Single-state, single-distillery Texas bourbon with a stated age near eight years is still uncommon, and a three-barrel release makes it rarer. For fans who know Milam & Greene mainly for its blends, this is a chance to taste the distillery's own whiskey on its own terms, at cask strength-adjacent proof and with a rye-forward mash bill.

Desert Marigold is a neat piece of brand storytelling backed by real specifics: a stated age, a clear mash bill, named barrel specs and a tiny yield. For anyone curious about Texas whiskey beyond the big names, an all-estate pour at this age is a good reference bottle. Given just 288 bottles, collectors may want to check the website countdown before this one goes quiet.

Bar Talk: Milam & Greene usually blends Texas and Kentucky whiskey, but Desert Marigold is 100% Texas, from only three barrels.
