Jack Daniel's Coy Hill Rye

For the first time, a rye aged in Jack Daniel's famed Coy Hill barrelhouses is being bottled as a Single Barrel release. The Jack Daniel Distillery has announced Single Barrel Special Release Coy Hill Rye, a barrel proof Tennessee rye that spent ten years on the highest point of the distillery grounds. It is the 2026 edition of the brand's annual limited series, and it is on shelves now at select stores nationwide.

Did You Know?

  • Coy Hill is the highest elevation point at the Jack Daniel Distillery, and the swings in temperature up there are a big part of what shapes the whiskey.

  • The 2021 Coy Hill High Proof release marked the highest proofs ever released in Jack Daniel's history.

  • According to Food & Wine, about 300 barrels were selected for this release, which works out to roughly 31,800 bottles.

The Release

This whiskey starts with Jack Daniel's Tennessee Rye mash bill of 70% rye, 18% corn and 12% malted barley. As with all Jack Daniel's whiskey, it was charcoal mellowed (filtered through charcoal before aging) and then filled into new, charred American white oak barrels in 2016.

The barrels then spent ten years across Barrelhouse 1 to 13 atop Coy Hill, where the high elevation brings intense seasonal temperature swings. Hot summers and cold winters push the whiskey in and out of the wood, which tends to speed up and deepen maturation. A Jack Daniel's representative told Food & Wine that every barrel was at least ten years old, making this some of the company's oldest rye to date.

It is a Single Barrel release, so each bottle comes from one individual barrel rather than a blend. That is why the proof is not fixed. It is bottled at barrel proof, meaning no water is added to bring it down, and runs from 128.7 to 148.5 proof (64.35% to 74.25% ABV) depending on the barrel.

Master Distiller Chris Fletcher said the previous Coy Hill releases "have been among our most acclaimed." He added that the team was thrilled to return to Coy Hill and showcase its Tennessee Rye with over ten years in the barrel.

According to the distillery, the aroma shows orchard fruit balanced with honey and toasted oak. The palate brings a touch of citrus sweetness layered with light molasses, black tea and robust oak. The finish varies slightly from barrel to barrel, but it consistently highlights sweeter rye notes and lingering barrel spices.

The Story of Jack Daniel's

The Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, was officially registered by the U.S. Government in 1866, making it the first registered distillery in the United States. It is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The brand is named for its founder, Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel, and has been owned by Brown-Forman since 1956.

Most people know the square bottle of Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey, but the lineup goes well beyond it. It includes Gentleman Jack Double Mellowed Tennessee Whiskey, Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey, Tennessee Honey, Tennessee Fire, Tennessee Apple, Tennessee Blackberry, Jack Daniel's Bonded, Sinatra Select and Jack Daniel's & Coca-Cola. The brand is sold in more than 170 countries and is recognized by Interbrand as the most valuable spirits brand in the world.

For collectors, the annual Single Barrel Special Release series is where the distillery experiments. This year's bottle follows the 2025 Tanyard Hill Rye. It also builds on a run of Coy Hill expressions: this year's Small Batch Rye, the 2024 Coy Hill Barrelhouse 8 Tennessee Whiskey, the 2022 Small Batch Coy Hill High Proof and the 2021 Coy Hill High Proof.

Why It Stands Out

Tennessee whiskey is best known for its mellow, charcoal filtered style, so a ten year old, barrel proof rye is a different side of the brand. Pairing a rye mash bill with a decade at the top of Coy Hill, in a bottling that stays true to its individual barrel, gives collectors something the core range does not. And at $89.99, it sits at a friendly price for a ten year old, cask strength bottle from one of the biggest names in whiskey.

A ten year old rye at barrel proof from Jack Daniel's is a fun twist, and the Coy Hill track record gives it extra credibility. Because each bottle comes from a single barrel, the proof and the finish will vary, so two bottles may not taste quite the same. If you want to compare barrels with friends, this one is built for it.
