Lord of the Rings Ringbearer Whisky Uses Manuka Honey Casks

Ringbearer Single Malt Whisky

Twenty-five years after The Fellowship of the Ring hit theaters, Middle-earth has its own single malt. Ringbearer comes from New Zealand's Pōkeno distillery, the country where the films were shot, and it is blended from four different cask types. One of them is a rare Manuka honey-seasoned cask, something Pōkeno says has never been done before. It is a licensed Lord of the Rings collectible, but the liquid inside is clearly meant to be sipped, not shelved.

What Makes This Release Special?

Plenty of movie-tie-in bottles lean on the label and call it a day. Ringbearer puts its effort into the blend, and the headline detail is the Manuka honey casks. Manuka honey is a signature New Zealand product, made from the nectar of the native manuka bush. Casks seasoned with it add a local twist you will not find in a typical single malt.

Pōkeno co-founder Matt Johns says using Manuka honey-seasoned casks is "the first time that this has been done."

The other angle is the setting. The whisky was designed with Syzygy Forge, the licensed Lord of the Rings collectibles company, to reflect the land where Middle-earth was filmed. That means local barley, a local climate and a local flavor, not just a famous logo. The release is a limited edition, global and officially licensed, and it marks the 25th anniversary of the first film.

Inside the Bottle

Ringbearer is a single malt, which means it is made only from malted barley at one distillery. Here that barley is 100% New Zealand grown, sourced from South Island family farms. Pōkeno ferments it for about 90 hours, a long fermentation that tends to build fruitier, more layered flavors before distillation.

The whisky carries an age statement of at least six years. That may sound young, but Pōkeno's sub-tropical climate makes the whisky lose more to the angel's share (the liquid that evaporates from a barrel) than in most whisk(e)y regions. That speeds up maturation.

The blend is roughly 45% first-fill bourbon casks, 35% virgin oak, 10% French Muscat casks and the remaining 5 to 12% Manuka honey casks, varying by batch.

According to the producers, the whisky is a dragon hoard gold color. The nose shows creamy vanilla, white chocolate and Manuka honey, then white peach. The palate is spicy, with banana and melon, moving into honey on warm buttered toast. The finish is long, with the Manuka honey sweetness and a gentle warmth.

The Story Behind Pōkeno

Pōkeno started in 2017 with a narrow focus: make New Zealand single malt and nothing else. It has since shipped to 30 countries and picked up awards for six of its whiskies. Its Triple Distilled expression from the Exploration Series was named Best World Single Malt at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Awards. Its Alchemy was named one of the world's top five small batch whiskies at the 2026 World Whiskies Awards.

Ringbearer began with a collector looking for something special. Syzygy Forge founder Jordan Costner, a lifelong Tolkien collector, and co-founder Shawn Mason wanted a spirit that tied the terroir of New Zealand to the warmth of the Shire. Their search led them to Pōkeno and co-founder Matt Johns, in the lands north of the Shire's now-famous filming location.

What started as a conversation grew into a collaboration. The idea was a whisky that felt like it could have been dreamed up over pints beside the fire at the Green Dragon Inn.

Tonights Poison Take

Ringbearer works as a gift for a Tolkien devotee, and it also gives whisky fans a real reason to try a New Zealand single malt. The cask recipe is genuinely unusual, and at $109.99 it sits in the range of a limited, collectible release with a story attached. Lord of the Rings fans will want the bottle, and curious whisky drinkers will want to know what Manuka honey does to a malt. Limited and licensed releases tend to disappear, so fans should start looking sooner rather than later.

Bar Talk: This Lord of the Rings whisky is partly aged in Manuka honey casks, which its makers say is a first.
