Chichibu Australia Edition 2026 Launches with 'Whisky Girl' Label

Here is a detail that makes this release stand out: part of the whisky matured in a Chibidaru, a small Japanese cask built in Chichibu's own cooperage. Casa de Vinos has announced the Chichibu Australia Edition 2026, the third annual release in a series made with the Japanese distillery. It is limited to 480 bottles, bottled at 48.5% ABV, and wrapped in a label by Sydney artist Yosi Messiah.
Did You Know?
Chibidaru is Japanese for "small cask," and it works like a Scotch quarter cask. Chichibu makes them in its own cooperage.
The first two Australia Editions carried watercolours by Melbourne artist Mark Cowell, showing a Melbourne W-class tram in 2024 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 2025.
Chichibu was the first new whisky distillery license granted in Japan in 35 years.
The Release
The 2026 Australia Edition is an entirely non-peated single malt. That means the malted barley was not dried over peat smoke, so you will not find smoky character here. The whisky combines six casks, drawing on bourbon barrel, hogshead, Chibidaru and a local Chichibu red-wine cask component.
The label is as much a talking point as the liquid. Casa de Vinos deliberately changed both artist and visual direction after two years of Cowell's watercolours. Messiah is known for figurative abstract work with strong colour, movement and recurring imaginary female figures, including Geishas. His piece, titled "Whisky Girl," was made in mixed media with silver and gold pigment. The Geisha holds a whisky glass, and the background was built to echo the amber colour of the whisky.
Messiah said of his subject, "To me Geishas represent refinement, elegance, beauty and strength." Jose Dymenstein of Casa de Vinos said the brief was not to imitate a Japanese style. He asked Messiah to keep the work recognisably his own and to make it bright, vivid and colourful.
According to the brand's official tasting notes, the nose offers grapefruit, honey and orange peel. The palate brings apricot, milk chocolate and lychee, and the finish is described as refreshing, mild and very smooth.
The Story of Chichibu
Chichibu Distillery sits in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, and was founded by Ichiro Akuto, who gave Japan its first new whisky distillery license in 35 years. It is operated by Venture Whisky Ltd and began production in 2008.
Akuto's story goes back further. Venture Whisky was set up in 2004 to release Ichiro's Malt, made from remaining stock of the Hanyu Distillery, which had belonged to his family's company. Chichibu was the next step, a distillery of his own. Its success is widely credited with helping revive Japanese whisky and inspiring a wave of new distilleries across the country.
The Australia Edition series, which started in 2024, ties that craft-distillery reputation to Australian creative work.
Why It Stands Out
Artist-led labels are common, but this series changes the art every year, and the 2026 edition shifts from watercolour landscapes to bold, colourful figurative work. The six-cask recipe, including the house-made Chibidaru and a local red-wine cask, gives collectors a distinctly Chichibu liquid to go with the artwork. At only 480 bottles, it will not stay on shelves for long.

Tonights Poison Take
This is a neat pairing of a respected Japanese craft distillery and an Australian artist, and the brief to keep the art true to Messiah rather than imitate a Japanese look is a smart one. For drinkers, the unpeated profile and the mix of bourbon, small-cask and red-wine influence suggest a fruit-forward, approachable pour, going by the official notes. Collectors should note the small run and the series' habit of switching artists.
Bar Talk: The Chichibu Australia Edition is aged partly in a small Japanese "Chibidaru" cask made at the distillery's own cooperage, and only 480 bottles exist.
Send this to the friend who collects limited Japanese whisky and loves a good label.
Please enjoy responsibly.
