The Glenlivet Unveils 12 Year Old Provence Edition

For the first time in its history, The Glenlivet has aged whisky in French white wine casks, and the wine in question comes from one of just 18 elite estates in Provence. The new 12 Year Old Provence Edition is a limited release in the brand's Beyond Speyside series, and it pairs that Provence cask with two famous sweet wine casks from France. It carries a recommended price of $54.99, which makes it an approachable way into a genuinely experimental Glenlivet.
Did You Know?
This is the first time The Glenlivet has used French white wine casks in any expression.
Château Sainte Marguerite is one of only 18 estates to hold the Cru Classé des Côtes de Provence designation.
The whisky recently won a Gold medal at the 2026 Scotch Whisky Masters.
The Release
The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Provence Edition is the latest chapter in Beyond Speyside, a series that takes the classic Speyside single malt somewhere new. Here, that somewhere is the south of France.
Cask Master Kevin Balmforth and his team created what the brand calls a first-of-its-kind Glenlivet by finishing the whisky in three types of French wine cask. A finish means the whisky spends extra time in a different cask after its main aging, picking up new flavors. The three casks are rare cru classé white wine casks from Château Sainte Marguerite in Provence, plus Rivesaltes and Sauternes casks.
According to the distillery, each cask plays a different role. The Provence casks bring bright citrus and elegant floral notes. Rivesaltes casks add nuttiness and warming spice. Sauternes casks contribute marmalade and crème brûlée flavors. Balmforth said the goal was to take the whisky "somewhere unexpected" while keeping it unmistakably Glenlivet, and he described monitoring the finishing closely to keep the balance right.
The distillery describes the result as a balanced single malt that layers the brand's elegant, mellow house style with floral complexity and ripe orchard fruit. It lists white peach, nectarine, pear and bright citrus, along with subtle spice. One detail worth knowing: a portion of the whisky is finished in these French wine casks, so this is a finish on part of the blend of casks, not the whole liquid.
The packaging follows the theme, with lavender hues, warm golden tones and refined design details that nod to Provence's vineyards, flower fields and Riviera glamour. The brand's signature teal ties it back to the core range.
The Story of The Glenlivet
The Glenlivet is made in Scotland's Livet Valley, near Ballindalloch in Moray, and it dates to 1824. It is the oldest legal distillery in the Highlands, and it has operated almost continuously ever since. Illicit distilling was common across Speyside in the 1700s, and the distillery came out of the era after the Excise Act made legal production workable. Its only closure came during World War II.
Today it is one of the biggest single malt distilleries in Scotland. The brand is the best selling single malt in the United States and the second biggest globally, behind Glenfiddich. The distillery is owned by Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard, and most of its output is sold as The Glenlivet single malt.
The house style is known for being elegant and mellow, which is exactly why a project like Beyond Speyside is interesting. It tests how far that smooth, fruity character can be pushed without losing its identity.
Why It Stands Out
Wine cask finishes are common in Scotch, but using a Provence white wine cask is much less so. Most finishes lean on sherry, port or red wine. The combination of a dry, floral Provence cask with sweet Sauternes and nutty Rivesaltes is a thoughtful balancing act. For collectors, the first-ever use of French white wine casks by a brand this size gives the bottle a real "first" to point to, and the Gold medal adds some early credibility.

Tonights Poison Take
This looks like a smart, fairly priced experiment from the biggest name in single malt. A 12 year old with a first-ever cask type for the brand at under $55 is the kind of limited release that can sell through quickly. If you like fruit-forward, floral Scotch, or you want to see how a classic Speyside handles a French accent, it is worth tracking down.
Bar Talk: The Glenlivet just used French white wine casks for the first time ever, and they came from one of only 18 top-tier Provence estates.
