Scheduled to be gradually distributed across China through selective channels starting December 12th, 2023, The Chuan promises to redefine the whisky experience for enthusiasts across the country.
Alexandre Ricard, Chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard, expressed his excitement about this pioneering adventure, blending the natural beauty of the Emeishan landscape with the skill and craftsmanship of their distillers. The result? A whisky to be proud of and a unique experience that will resonate with whisky enthusiasts for years to come. But The Chuan experience doesn't stop there. Pernod Ricard has also announced the opening of The Chuan Malt Whisky Distillery Experience Centre, located on the grounds of the Emeishan distillery. This centre offers visitors a holistic tour experience, including an immersive introduction, a detailed demonstration of The Chuan whisky craftsmanship, tastings, gift shopping, and fine dining featuring Sichuan fusion cuisine and local ingredients that complement the sophistication of the whisky.
Designed by the award-winning architectural studio Neri&Hu, The Chuan Distillery boasts timeless architecture that harmonizes with the landscape and artistry embedded in whisky-making. The site also features a permanent art installation by Zhan Wang, one of China's celebrated contemporary artists.
Aligned with Pernod Ricard's 2030 Sustainability & Responsibility strategy, The Chuan Distillery is making significant efforts to reduce carbon emissions by sourcing 100% renewable electricity and optimize resource usage. With a substantial investment of one billion RMB, Pernod Ricard is contributing to the high-quality development of Sichuan by supporting local agriculture, the whisky-making industry, and tourism.
Named after its unique terroir in the Emei Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site, The Chuan embraces local craftsmanship and rich layers of terroir. The whisky-making process takes advantage of the exceptional environment created by year-round precipitation and summer heat. European and Chinese barley, three types of oak from three continents, and Chinese Single Oak casks from Changbai Mountain contribute to The Chuan's complexity and unique flavor profile. Bourbon casks from America lead to an elegant vanilla and fruity aroma, followed by pronounced sweet notes from sherry casks of Spain, resulting in a rich and full-bodied whisky. Finally, the proprietary Chinese Single Oak casks impart a long finish of sandalwood and mandarin peel on the palate.
