Glenmorangie Unveils 50 Year Old, Its Oldest Whisky Yet

Some of the barley behind this whisky was malted in a place that stopped making malt nearly 50 years ago. Glenmorangie has announced Glenmorangie 50 Year Old, the oldest whisky it has ever bottled, built on some of the last batches of barley malted in the distillery's own floor maltings before they were decommissioned in 1977. Only 149 bottles exist, each in a handmade porcelain vessel, which makes this one of the most collectible Scotch releases of the year.
Did You Know?
The ceramicist Peter Pincus and his team spent 1,000 days handcrafting 149 porcelain display vessels, one for every bottle.
The whisky was already well aged when Dr Bill Lumsden joined Glenmorangie as Distillery Manager in 1995. He has overseen its last 30 years.
Glenmorangie says the barley's floor malting adds rare hints of smoke to the whisky.
The Release
This is a single malt Scotch whisky, meaning it comes from one distillery and is made from malted barley. It was matured in a mix of Bourbon hogshead casks and first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts. A hogshead is a mid-sized cask, a butt is a larger one, and "first-fill" means the sherry cask was holding its first batch of whisky after wine production.
The story picks up in the 1990s. When Dr Bill arrived in 1995, he spotted a handful of casks with the potential for very long ageing. In 1999 he picked a small parcel from them, mostly whisky from Bourbon casks plus a smaller share from Sherry butts. He then married the two together in a single refill hogshead. "Refill" means the cask had held whisky before, so it gives up less wood flavor.
That hogshead was tightly coopered, meaning built with very close-fitting staves, so the whisky could age slowly and pick up only the gentlest wood influence. Over the next 25 years it mellowed, balancing Glenmorangie's signature elegance with intense sherried notes. After five decades in total, Dr Bill decided it was ready.
According to Whisky Advocate, the marrying ratio was about 75% Bourbon-matured to 25% Sherry-matured whisky. It also reports the final cask yielded exactly 149 bottles plus a small amount for sampling, and that Lumsden says the cask is now empty.
On tasting notes, Glenmorangie describes a rich mahogany color. The aroma is said to bring baked oranges, sultanas and nutmeg, with a herbal top note. On the palate, it is described as gently peppery, with toffee, stewed Assam tea leaves and birch tar, plus wisps of clove and oak tannin.
Each bottle comes in a bespoke porcelain vessel by American ceramicist Peter Pincus. He visited the distillery and tasted the whisky before he and his studio team started work.
The Story of Glenmorangie
Glenmorangie is a Highland distillery in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland. The name is believed to come from the Gaelic for either "vale of tranquillity" or "vale of big meadows," and it is pronounced with the stress on the second syllable. The distillery is known for having the tallest stills in Scotland.
According to the Glenmorangie Company, the earliest record of alcohol production at Morangie Farm dates to 1703. A brewery followed in the 1730s, sharing the farm's water source, the Tarlogie Spring. In 1843, William Matheson, a former distillery manager at Balblair, acquired the farm.
Today Glenmorangie is owned by The Glenmorangie Company Ltd, a subsidiary of Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy. The core range includes Original (12 year old), 18 and 25 year old bottlings. Around it sit special cask bottlings, cask finishes, extra matured releases and limited editions. The 50 Year Old now tops that ladder by a wide margin.
Why It Stands Out
Age statements this high are rare, and the story behind this one is unusually specific. The spirit comes from a vanished production step, the distillery's own floor maltings, and it was tracked by one whisky maker for three decades. Add a cask that is now empty and a numbered run of 149, and this is a one-time release. Lumsden himself called the whole thing an "unrepeatable work of art."

Tonights Poison Take
Most ultra-aged whiskies lean on the age number alone. This one has a clear paper trail: barley from a closed malting floor, one cask, one whisky maker. At £25,800 it is firmly in collector and gift territory, and with only 149 bottles, few will ever be opened for a pour. For the rest of us, it is a fascinating look at how patience works in Scotch.
Bar Talk: Glenmorangie's new 50 Year Old was made partly from barley malted at the distillery itself, a practice that ended in 1977.
