Octomore 17 Series

Octomore 17.3 is made entirely from barley grown in a single field, Irene's Field on Octomore Farm, just two miles from the distillery, and it is peated to a staggering 132.1 PPM. Bruichladdich has just released the Octomore 17 Series, its annual run of four limited, super-heavily peated Islay single malts. The big twist this year is that the fourth bottle, the 17.4, is coming to the United States for the first time.

Did You Know?

  • PPM stands for parts per million, a measure of the smoky peat compounds in the malted barley. For this series it runs from 81 PPM in the 17.1 and 17.2 up to 132.1 PPM in the 17.3.

  • The ".4" release has historically been kept as a distillery exclusive and sold in limited markets around the world. Octomore 17.4 is the first to launch in the US.

  • According to Men's Journal, past Octomore releases have reached 301.9 PPM, while a very smoky Ardbeg may only reach 55 PPM.

The Release

Bruichladdich says each Octomore series is an experiment in how barley origin, peat level and cask maturation shape a whisky. Every annual series is four expressions that cannot be repeated, and they are bottled at or near cask strength (the natural strength of the whisky, with little or no water added), often at younger ages than typical Scotch.

The 17 Series uses traceable, super-heavily peated barley from mainland Scotland and Islay, matured in casks that once held bourbon, Sauternes, Port, Eiswein (ice wine) and Oloroso sherry.

Octomore 17.1 is the reference point. It is made from 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley malted to 81 PPM and matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels, meaning the barrels were being used for the first time to age whisky after holding bourbon. According to the distillery, it shows salt, smoke and sweetness. It is priced at $204.99.

Octomore 17.2 uses the same barley batch and the same 81 PPM, but the cask plan changes. It spent four years in second-fill French oak casks that previously held bourbon, then was finished in first-fill Port casks. Bruichladdich says Octomore spirit has never been matured in that combination before. The distillery points to notes of pepper, citrus and berries. It is $244.99.

Octomore 17.3 is the single-farm, single-field, single-vintage bottle. The barley comes only from Irene's Field on Octomore Farm and is peated to 132.1 PPM. It spent five years in first-fill bourbon barrels and second-fill Ribera del Duero, Sauternes, Eiswein and Syrah casks. Master Blender Adam Hannett says, "You don't get a whisky with greater provenance than this." He calls it elemental and expressive, powerful yet composed, and coastal. It is $279.99.

Octomore 17.4 arrives October 1, 2026. It is malted to 108.2 PPM, matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks and finished in French virgin oak. The distillery describes oak spice and dried fruit alongside powerful peat smoke and maritime character. It is priced at $249.99.

The Story of Bruichladdich

Bruichladdich sits on the Rhinns of Islay, the island's westernmost stretch, on the shore of Loch Indaal. It was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers, William, John and Robert, from a Glasgow whisky family. The distillery closed several times over the decades, and its current form opened in 2001. Rémy Cointreau has owned it since 2012.

Bruichladdich is known for tall, narrow-necked stills that turn even extreme peat levels into a whisky the distillery describes as balanced and elegant. That is the paradox at the heart of Octomore, a heavily peated whisky that is not meant to be a blunt smoke bomb. The distillery also makes The Botanist gin.

Octomore is the brand's most experimental line, and this is its 17th year of releases. Unlike many whiskies built for consistency, each series is a one-off. Every Octomore is conceived, distilled, matured and bottled on Islay. It is non-chill filtered, has no added color, and is brought to strength with Octomore Spring water.

Why It Stands Out

Most peated whisky is sold on smoke alone. Octomore asks a more interesting question: what happens when you change one thing at a time? Putting 17.1 and 17.2 side by side isolates what a Port finish does to the same spirit. The 17.3 isolates place and harvest. Men's Journal notes this series has lower peat levels than some past years, which may suit drinkers who want to explore Octomore without the most extreme numbers.

Tonights Poison Take

This is a smart year to dive into Octomore. The 17.1 and 17.2 pairing is a clean lesson in cask influence, and the 17.3 is the bottle for provenance nerds. The 17.4 will likely draw the most attention because of its first US launch and online-only sale, so collectors should plan ahead for October 1.

Bar Talk: Octomore's 17.3 is made from barley grown in one field two miles from the distillery, and it is peated to 132.1 PPM.
