Benromach 25 Years Old

Benromach began producing whisky in 1900 and shut its doors the same year because the money ran out. A century and a quarter later, the Speyside distillery has put out the oldest bottle in its signature range, Benromach 25 Years Old. It went on sale today, October 22, and the distillery calls it the pinnacle of that range and a new milestone for the distillery.

Did You Know?

  • Benromach was founded in 1898, but the whisky didn't start flowing until 1900, and the distillery closed that same year.

  • The distillery draws its spring water from the Chapelton Springs in the Romach Hills, right beside Forres in Moray.

  • Despite the age, this one is bottled at a modest 46%, so it's built around balance rather than raw power.

The Release

Benromach 25 Years Old is a single malt matured exclusively in Bourbon and Sherry casks. The distillery describes it as rich and incredibly well-balanced, while keeping the hint of smoke that Benromach is known for. It is also non-chill filtered, which means it skips the step of chilling the whisky to strip out haze. That generally leaves more of the oils and texture in the glass.

According to the distillery, the nose brings rich berry aromas with toffee apples and soft smoke. On the palate, it describes vibrant raisin and orange notes, followed by tropical fruit, dried banana and mature oak. Benromach also says the whisky is made by hand and that sharing it is a privilege.

Pricing is £250 (about $335). It is available online and at the Benromach Visitor Centre starting October 22. Shipping is UK only at launch. The distillery says the whisky will be heading to international markets very soon, but no US date or price has been announced.

The Story of Benromach

Benromach is a Speyside distillery near Forres in Moray, founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman. McCallum had previously worked at the Glen Nevis Distillery in Campbeltown, while Brickman was a spirit broker in Leith, Edinburgh. A downturn in the Scotch whisky trade delayed the start of production until 1900, and the distillery closed that same year for lack of funds.

The story didn't end there. In 1911 the distillery was acquired by London-based Harvey McNair & Co, which kept distilling until the First World War. It then passed through several owners, including Benromach Distillery Ltd, Associated Scottish Distilleries Ltd and later Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. Today it is owned and run by Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, the independent Scotch family firm.

Why It Stands Out

Twenty-five years is a serious age statement in Scotch, and the cask recipe here is refreshingly straightforward: only Bourbon and Sherry casks. Together with the 46% bottling strength and the gentle smoke, it points to an elegant, layered style rather than a heavy one. For fans of the brand, it is a new top rung on the signature range.
